Data-driven attribution

Updated November 4, 2026 · Markitech team

Definition

Data-driven attribution is a model that splits credit for a conversion across the ads and channels a person interacted with, based on how much each touchpoint actually contributed.

In practice

It is the default attribution model in GA4 and Google Ads. Google retired the first-click, linear, time-decay and position-based models in 2023, leaving data-driven and last-click.

The model learns from your own conversion paths, so it improves as more conversions and touchpoints are measured accurately.

Comparing GA4 with each ad platform’s own reporting will still show different totals, because every platform attributes with its own data and windows.
