Data layer design your developers can implement

One clean event specification that feeds GA4, Google Ads, Meta, LinkedIn and TikTok without one-off hacks.

Updated November 4, 2026 · Markitech team

Every reliable tracking setup starts with the data layer: the events your site pushes and the parameters each one carries. When it is designed per platform, you end up with five slightly different versions of the same purchase.

Markitech designs one specification, from event names and required parameters to transaction and event IDs and hashed user data, and maps it to every destination tag.

How to do it

  1. List the business events: lead, sign-up, add to cart, purchase and others.
  2. Define event names and required parameters for each, aligned with GA4 recommended events.
  3. Add identifiers: transaction_id, event_id and external_id.
  4. Specify user data fields for enhanced conversions and CAPI, with consent rules.
  5. Document examples developers can copy.
  6. Map each event to tags in the web and server containers.

Common mistakes

  • Naming events per platform instead of per business action.
  • Leaving out currency or value.
  • Generating IDs in tags instead of the data layer.
  • No documentation, so the next release breaks it.
