What is an MCP server?

Updated November 4, 2026 · Markitech team

The short answer

An MCP server is a service that exposes tools an AI assistant can call through the Model Context Protocol, an open standard. A marketing MCP server exposes platforms such as Google Ads, GA4 and Tag Manager, so the AI can read the data directly.

In more detail

Each tool has a name, a description and the inputs it accepts, such as "get campaign performance for this date range". The AI reads those descriptions and decides which tools to call to answer your request.

Without an MCP server, an AI can only describe what you should do. With one, it can do the work: pull the report, find the broken trigger and explain the fix.

What separates one marketing MCP server from another is coverage, cross-platform context, how credentials are handled and whether changes are held for approval.

MCP servers can run locally on a computer or as hosted services. Markitech is hosted, so there is nothing to install: you add it to your AI client and sign in. Its MCP server is read-only today; changes are made in the Markitech app with your approval.

Every change, approved by you

Markitech proposes each write action in chat, such as a budget change, a paused campaign or a Tag Manager publish, and holds it until you approve it. Reporting and lookups run without approval, so you can ask as many questions as you need.
